Funding Our Fire Department

From the beginning, we built our fire department and community center through the generosity of our friends, neighbors, businesses and various foundations.  We do not receive financial support from any county, state, or federal government entity.  We started with the gift of a fire truck from the city of Robert Lee.  Our building sits on land donated by David Hirschfeld.  Our fire house was built through various grants and the tremendous support of local residents. Visit our Donors web page to see who is supporting our fire department.   Over the years we have upgraded our fire fighting equipment and obtained our operational funds through our various fundraising activities.  Going forward we will need to upgrade equipment as things wear out.  We must also add the resources necessary to be able to provide new services that recent events have shown that we need to provide.  Recent fatality vehicular accidents prompted us to purchase extraction tools ("Jaws of life") using funds from our Cook-off event in 2018.  Although these tools were not needed in these accidents, we now have them in case we ever do have the need.  2018 also showed us the very real need for water rescue equipment and training.  We assisted in two rescues where vehicles were swept off the roadway at the San Saba low water crossing here in Fort McKavett.  We assisted the Junction fire department and one from San Antonio who used their boats in the rescue.

We continue to need the support of our friends, neighbors, and businesses to accomplish all the good things we are doing.  Below are some suggestions on how you can help fund us.

Annual Fund Raiser   Our 20th Anniversary Cook-Off and Fund Raiser has been postponed. The Covid-19 Virus is a rapidly spreading virus that can be deadly.  When it is safe for our guests, volunteers and members we will once again have our cook-off and fund raiser.

Our one major fund raising event is the second Saturday in June.   Each year we sponsor a BBQ Cook-off with cooking teams from all over Texas participating.  We serve the cook-off teams a pancake breakfast that morning to get their day started.  At noon, we serve up a great meal featuring BBQ brisket, chicken, sausage, and all the trimmings. We have live music during the meal.  In the afternoon we have our auctions and raffle drawings, followed by the cook-off awards.

Our fund raising activities include a raffle for firearms, gift cerytificates, and gift cards.  We have a silent auction with several tables full of donated items that you can bid to buy. We also sell Fort McKavett Fire Department T-shirts and ball caps.  There is a live auction where you can bid for a wide variety of the bigger items.  We won't know until the week of the event just what we will have in the auction, but in past years we have had guns, tools, quilts, art work, jewelry, electronics and big game hunts to name a few,  When we resume our Cook-offs we invite you to come out to this fun-filled event, buy raffle tickets, and bid on our auction items.  You can support us by participating in the auctions and raffle.  There will also be a donation box at the beginning of each noon-meal serving line.

If you have some extra time available you can volunteer to help with our June event.  Drop us an email to let us know if you would like to volunteer your time.

We are now able to accept charge cards for most purchases (fireamrs and ammunitrion is exclude) at our BBQ Cook-off and Fund Raiser.

We take these Charge Cards

Give a Gift/ Make a Donation  We begin our yearly fund raising project every spring. We send out a letter to those local land owners who do not live in our area letting them know what we have accomplished over the last year and asking for their continued support of our department.  The donations that we receive as a result of these letters in 2018 along with unsolicited donations from local ranchers and businesses amounted to about 37% of our gross revenue.  These donations are a vital part of our fund raising activities.

We have been very fortunate to have received several grants that enabled us to buy a new trucks, build our fire station and finish its interior, install a water catchment system that is used to fill our water tanks, install a covered roof over our BBQ cook area, build a well house, build a carport and adjacent building to put the trucks when they need to be removed from the bays, and most recently to build a medical emergency helicopter evacuation landing site.  We are grateful to the following organizations, foundations, and indivoiduals for awarding us these grants: The San Angelo Health Foundation, the Chaparral Foundation, Dodge Jones Foundation, Abell-Hanger Foundation, Texas Forest Service, the Fort McKavett Cemetery Association, David Hirschfeld, Joe and Janet Andrews, and Calvin and Cora McGowen.  In addition to these organizations and individuals, we have received significant cash donations from members of the local community.
